The Aluminium Bahrain smelter

Areva, a global leader in nuclear power, said the company’s transmission and distribution division has been awarded a $88.74-million industrial upgradation contract by Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), one of the largest aluminum producers in the Middle East.

Under the deal, Areva will design, manufacture and commission 10 transformer-rectifier groups each of 37 kA 1200 V for Alba, said a company statement.
The equipment will be installed at the Alba plant located in Bahrain and replace existing units. This is the largest industrial project of upgrading launched in the kingdom, the statement added.
Paris-based Areva has been present in the region for more than two decades.
With manufacturing facilities in 43 countries and a sales network in more than 100, Areva offers customers reliable technological solutions for CO2-free power generation and electricity transmission and distribution.
Philippe Guillemot, Areva transmission and distribution chairman and CEO, said the contract win was a testimony to Areva’s capacities and expertise in the modernisation of existing smelters.
“The new equipment will fit in the same space as the old one, while providing a rating increased by 45 per cent.  The installation will be done without slowing down the aluminum production,” he added.
