FloormapVS2i

Non-destructive testing equipment specialist Silverwing UK has chosen the rugged JLT fixed-mount PC for its FloormapVS2i advanced oil and petrochemical storage tank inspection device that detects corrosion using magnetic flux leakage (MFL).

Supplied by JLT value-added reseller partner Rugged Mobile Systems, Silverwing UK selected the 12.1-inch touch screen PC to provide the computing power for the innovative tank floor scanner based on its low-power consumption, extremely durable design, high-temperature resistance and reliability.
The JLT unit supersedes the on-board computer technology previously used by Silverwing UK to run its custom-designed data acquisition software. The software not only captures all the MFL signals but analyses and displays the location and severity of the corrosion in real time on the user-friendly touch screen.
“We evaluated several devices from different manufacturers and settled on the JLT unit because of its superior features,” said Simon Packer, managing director, Silverwing UK.
“The temperature within a tank can be extreme – up to 40 degrees Celsius in some cases – and humidity levels are high especially in tropical environments. The JLT unit copes admirably by virtue of its high IP-rated casing and its superior heat sink provides reliable running under these extreme conditions. In addition, the low-power requirements of the JLT unit mean that we can run it from the same batteries as the FloormapVS2i scanner without compromising battery life.”
The scanner is calibrated outside of the storage tank and here the daylight readable touch screen provides a distinct advantage. The screen is then dimmed following calibration to prevent screen glare when the Floormap VS2 is in use within the tank.
Ges Jones, director, Rugged Mobile Systems, commented: “Rugged Mobile Systems is pleased to supply Silverwing UK with the JLT fixed-mount PCs. We loaned the company a unit for testing and it proved to be the ideal device for the scanner. The JLT PC leads the way in its suitability for hostile environments and provides high levels of reliability required for demanding application.”
The JLT fixed-mount PCs incorporate an aircraft-grade aluminium chassis with a high-tech outer casing that resists chemical attack and provides a waterproof and dust proof seal. All models in the range are subjected to strict testing including water-sealing tests up to IP67, humidity, vibration and shock and exceed MIL STD 810F.
