One of the oldest ship repair companies in the Gulf has had a very good year in 2007.

Bahrain Ship Repair and Engineering Co (Basrec) has surpassed its 2006 net profit level in the first nine months of 2007, registering BD1.08 million ($2.86 million), a 158 per cent over the corresponding period in the previous year.
Profits in 2006 were BD779,900.
Established in 1963, Basrec undertakes a wide range of repairs and maintenance work on vessels working in and around the Arabian Gulf.
The company has also been involved in newbuildings, having completed projects to build small craft and barges and a 20 m lightfloat.
Facilities include a floating dock of 120 m x 18.5 m with a lifting capacity of up to 6,000 tonnes dwt and two 80-m-long slipways of up to 1,000 tonnes. The two repair quaysides have a minimum of 6 m water depth and can accommodate vessels of up to 170 m.
Basrec has departments for small boats, steel work, shipwrights and pipework, electrical work, fitting and machine shop activities.
Repairs at the small boat department cater to rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIB) and GFR craft.
The steelwork department is equipped with a press of up to 100-tonne capacity for the manufacture of flanged plates and cones. The plate thickness determination is approved by Lloyds Register of Shipping to Grade 2.
The pipework department deals with all sizes in copper, galvanised and black steel. Welders of the department are approved to Classification Society requirements. Sheet metal work is done by using galvanised or aluminium material.  Department work includes re-tubing and boiler refractory repairs, insulation of pipes with preformed slabs and cloth and sheet metal cladding.
The machine shop offers machine capacity for heavy/light turning, boring, planning, milling, drilling, shaping and slotting. The activities involve reclamation of shafting using Helifusion spiral welding (ABS approved), straightening of shafts and metalock repairs to castings.
A container repair section undertakes full inspection services, cleaning, steel work, blasting and painting and woodwork. These activities can be carried out in the workshop situated at Mina Salman or at the customer’s site utilising a fully equipped mobile workshop.
The fitting department includes engine fitters for overhaul of diesel engines/gear boxes from the smallest to the largest diesel engines as well as mechanical fitters for overhaul of pumps, valves and general machinery including the cleaning of heat exchangers and coolers.
The activities include removal of tailshafts, propellers and rudders for survey and repair, alignment checks and bearing replacement.
