Datastrip is launching a new terminal called DSVERIFY, to support high security ID schemes based on high density barcodes, smart cards and other portable storage mechanisms.

The terminal is the first to integrate readers for fingerprints and 2D barcodes, and offers these capabilities in the form of a handheld device which is easily deployed in any situation from vehicles to retail counters, says a company spokesman.

It provides an ergonomic and cost-effective solution for rolling-out personal ID-or auto ID-schemes based on new high security devices. These devices, such as high-density 2D barcodes, or smart cards, will automate procedures based on unique identification mechanisms such as photos, fingerprints and signatures, he says.

DSVERIFY comes with two code readers as standard: a fingerprint pad and a contact reader for 2D barcodes which is compatible with Datastrip's own 2D Superscript code or the standard PDF-417 format. These decode options include OCR and smart cards.

A miniature alphanumeric keyboard, colour LCD, and a range of interfaces including ethernet and infrared provide the means to link with IT networks, to perform transactions which are completely tailored to the individual organisation's needs - such as entering details of a driving offence to a scanned licence record - and to interface with local peripherals ranging from an input device like a signature pad to an output device such as a printer.

The main application of DSVERIFY is the implementation of biometric ID schemes based on ultra low-cost printed codes. It can store over 2 kbytes of data in the same area as the magnetic stripe on a credit card.
