BASF, wood binders come closer

BASF’s headquarters in Ludwigshafen, Germany

BASF, from the beginning of 2016, will combine the marketing and development of its wood binders of the Kaurit, Kauramin, and Lupranat brands. This is in response to the needs of the wood-working industry. BASF customers will benefit from a single source for all adhesive systems. The company is the only supplier in the world to offer both amino resin-based and isocyanate-based wood binders. Previously, customers have had to deal with two separate sales units.

BASF is also to expand its research in wood binder solutions. In close partnership with customers, the tried-and-tested Kaurit and Lupranat brands are to be combined to form completely new wood binder systems: “Our customers are always looking for ways to lower costs and increase their productivity. We see tremendous potential in the combination of amino resins and isocyanates. We intend to create binder systems that shorten process times and improve the characteristics of wood-based materials,” says Wolfgang Gutting, vice president for amino resins at BASF.

BASF has over 100 years’ experience in the wood-working industry and offers an extensive product portfolio that includes binders, process aids, wood preservation agents, varnishes, pigment preparations, and more.

Kaurit and Kauraminglues are condensation products made from urea and formaldehyde. Kauramin also contains melamine. Glues of the Kaurit and Kauramin brands are especially suitable for the efficient production of a wide range of wood-based materials from particle board and fiberboard to OSB.

Lupranat is the brand name for BASF’s aromatic isocyanates. Lupranat M (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) has been used successfully for many years as a binder for OSB, particle board and medium-thickness fibreboard or wood fibre insulation boards. Lupranat M products have especially high reactivity, which significantly accelerates production processes in the wood-working industry and delivers perfect adhesion in wooden boards for furniture or house construction.

BASF had sales of over €74 billion in 2014 and around 113,000 employees as of the end of the year.

The company is listed on the stock markets in Frankfurt (BAS), London (BFA), and Zurich (AN).
