US-based global packaging solutions leader MeadWestvaco Corporation (MWV) has introduced three grades for its Natralock Security Packaging to give customers and brand owners greater flexibility surrounding their desired level of product security and brand protection.

Natralock packaging is offered in three different tear-resistant grades along with a variety of substrate selections, including MWV Printkote SBS, Printkote Eagle, Custom Kote CNK, and Kraftpak.
“Natralock’s outstanding strength and durability ensures the highest quality trap seal blister packaging solution that spans a wide array of applications,” said Jeff Kellogg, vice president, Natralock security packaging, MWV. “As such, our customers require different levels of security, so a ‘one-size-fits-all’ option isn’t ideal. By providing a choice of substrate grades we’re allowing customers to incorporate the appropriate levels of security features into their packaging as the product requires.”
All solutions obtain the ideal performance for fold-over or two-piece trap seal blister card applications where added pilfer resistance is desired, the company said. The three levels of tear-resistant substrate grades include:
• Natralock ETR - engineered for applications requiring the Elmendorf tear test specification. The tear strength of the paperboard remains constant even after a tear has been initiated.
• Natralock GTR - developed for items required to meet specifications established by the Graves tear test method. The paperboard is extremely difficult to tear without first initiating a nick with a sharp object and utilises a special construction for a better consumer experience.
•  Natralock NTR - features MWV’s Easy Seal technology and offers only the substrate’s inherent tear properties. This provides the most economical solution for non-secure products and applications.
Natralock security packaging is specifically engineered to be used as a clamshell replacement package to deter theft, increase product and brand security and enhance environmental sustainability objectives.
Natralock packaging starts with a theft-resistant, laminated paperboard that is recyclable, and is then combined with a clear APET or RPET thermoform to create a visible package that uses 50 to 60 per cent less plastic on average than traditional PVC clamshells and is nearly impossible to tear apart by hand.
However, a consumer can safely and easily open the Natralock package with a pair of household scissors, avoiding “wrap rage” and the often injurious struggle consumers experience with clamshells.
MWV provides packaging solutions to many of the world’s most admired brands in the healthcare, personal and beauty care, food, beverage, media and entertainment, and home and garden industries. The company’s businesses include Consumer & Office Products, Specialty Chemicals, and the Community Development and Land Management Group, which sustainably manages the company’s land holdings to support its operations, and to provide for conservation, recreation and development opportunities.
