Ducab’s Mussafah factory

Ducab, the premier cable manufacturer in the Middle East, will take over ownership of a cable factory of Electrocab Emarat LLC at Mussafah in Abu Dhabi.

The latter company is owned by Emirates International Investment Company (EIIC). Ducab said the move followed a strategic partnership it entered into with Electrocab.
Electrocab was planning to manufacture a wide range of electrical power cables at the new factory located in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD), 30 km from Abu Dhabi City.
The factory is equipped with the latest-generation manufacturing and testing facilities. The product range includes low, medium, high- and extra-high voltage cables, control and instrumentation cables (including lead-sheathed), building wires, flexible, THHN/THWN cables and fire performance cables.
As part of the Strategic Alliance, Electrocab and Ducab will explore participation in joint venture opportunities for the development of cable projects in the Middle East and North Africa region (excluding the UAE). Ducab has an ambitious investment plan as part of its 2015 Growth Strategy to expand into markets beyond the GCC area.
Andrew Shaw, Ducab’s managing director, said: “Ducab is determined to maintain its position as the premier cable manufacturer in the region and this partnership with EIIC will accelerate the company’s growth both in the UAE and Mena. We are delighted to have partnered with such strong companies as EIIC and Electrocab and we are looking forward to growing our business together.  The new factory in Abu Dhabi is a welcome addition to Ducab’s capacity in the UAE. As market leader we are committed to continual improvement in all aspects of our business and with this new facility we will be able to further improve product offer, service and delivery to our customers.”
Ducab is jointly owned by the Governments of Dubai and Abu Dhabi (50 per cent each) and operates two plants it owned prior to the Electocab factory.  At Jebel Ali in Dubai it has one of the most modern manufacturing units in the region, occupying an area of 590,000 sq m of land. The other plant is spread over a 220,000 sq m complex in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi.
Today, Ducab produces over 65,000 copper tonnes of low and medium voltage cables, emerging as the leader and first choice of prestigious customers in the Middle East. Ducab’s product range covers high voltage cables up to 132 kV, Ducab Powerplus medium voltage cables up to 33 kV, low voltage power cables, control and auxiliary, wiring and lead-sheathed cables, Ducab Smokemaster (LSF) cables and LPCB-approved Ducab FR (fire resistant) cables.
The FR cables are special cables that can maintain circuit integrity for three hours in case of fire. FR cables can be used in safety circuits associated with fire detection, alarm and evacuations, for power supplies to building equipment used in fire-fighting and control.
The company supplied almost 75 per cent of its production to projects in the UAE market while the balance was exported to GCC and rest of the Middle East, Asia and parts of Africa.
2007 was a very significant year with the company witnessing robust sales growth of over 50 per cent compared to 2006. The company recorded Dh1.1 billion within the first six months itself and surpassed the year-end target of Dh2.2 billion with a significant margin in 2007. The year’s sales turnover broke all previous records with a figure of Dh2.4 billion.
The two factories in Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi jointly produced in excess of 125,000 cable tonnes.
With major projects ongoing or planned for the near future, particularly in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Ducab is confident it will win substantial orders.
Ducab will this year commission the new copper rod plant in Abu Dhabi and also bring on line substantial additional capacity in all product groups.  The company said its plan was to increase sales by over 50 per cent in 2008 by increasing production capacity and new products will be introduced keeping in mind the increasing customer demands in the market.
Ducab is an ISO 9001:2000 certified company for both its factories. The Abu Dhabi factory was recently awarded the ISO 14001 environmental management system certificate and an 18001 Occupational Health and Safety certificate by BASEC (British Approval Services for Cables). The cables comply with and are approved to the full British Standard of the Loss Prevention Certificate Board (LPCB) and Lloyd’s Register, UK. These certifications are the latest in a string of recognitions achieved by the company including a two-time winner of the Gulf Excellence Award and a two-time winner of Dubai Quality Award, Gold category 2004 and 1998.
Ducab was recently honoured with the Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD) Chairman’s Award for outstanding economic value creation in the industrial sector.
