ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has introduced the new HP30 hydrogen process analyser intended for installation and use in refinery and petrochemical plant environments for the monitoring of hydrogen recycle and hydrogen make-up process streams.

The HP30 embodies the ABB “Measurement made easy” design philosophy by providing a simple to install plug and play analyser with built in sample conditioning and pressure regulation so that it can be directly connected to the process. This analyser delivers a fast and reliable hydrogen concentration measurements in the following unit operations: catalytic reformer, hydrocracker, isomerisation unit, butamer off-gas, hydrotreater and fuel gas production.

Hydrogen is an extremely important, valuable and limited resource within a modern complex refinery.

The profitable operation of a refinery is increasingly dependent on effective fuel upgrading and conversion activities, as well as effective control of final product fuel quality by managing the removal of sulphur from intermediate process streams.

On a typical refinery process unit, the HP30 hydrogen analyser can save more than $200,000 a year by improving hydrogen management.

Incorrect hydrogen management can lead to catalyst failure or significantly reduced throughput. The HP30 helps to prevent these process upsets and avoid millions in catalyst replacement costs. Using the latest sensor technology, the HP30 is not affected by typical refinery contaminants such as H2S, CO, CO2 and light hydrocarbons. It does not require regular maintenance and has no expensive consumables.

This brand new analyser was showcased at IFPAC 2016 at the Crystal City Marriott in Washington DC, last January.
