HDMI interface wins top award

Quality over a single cable

HDMI Licensing LLC, the agent that licenses the HDMI Specification, has announced that the HDMI interface has been honored with a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award for engineering excellence in the television community by the Television Academy.

The Engineering Emmy Award is given for developments and/or standardisation in engineering technologies which either represent so extensive an improvement on existing methods or are so innovative in nature that they have materially affected the transmission, recording, or reception of television. The award will be presented this month at the 66th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the 2015 International CES conference.

“To be recognised as one of the technology breakthroughs that has had a significant effect on television engineering is an immense honour for the HDMI organisation,” said Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing LLC. “What started out as a vision to improve the consumer experience has become the de-facto worldwide HD connectivity standard and a household name for exceptional digital audio and video quality over a single cable.”

Supporting the world of digital content, the HDMI interface has become the universally-implemented, standardised, digital connection for consumer electronics devices. By combining uncompressed high-definition video, multi-channel audio, and data in a single digital interface, HDMI technology delivers crystal-clear digital quality over a single cable. This development dramatically simplified the consumer experience and has led to the worldwide adoption of HDMI technology by consumers and manufacturers alike.

Today, over 1,500 HDMI adopters have created over four billion HDMI-enabled products that provide consumers with a superior viewing experience, pixel-for-pixel video accuracy, and audiophile-quality sound.

“The success of the HDMI Specification is based on its ability to constantly evolve to meet the changing needs of the market place with added functionality and new features,” said Arnold Brown, chairman of the board of HDMI Forum Inc. “Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification nearly doubled the bandwidth to 18 Gbps to support new features such as 4K@50/60 (2160p) and up to 32 audio channels, and our technical working group is working to deliver additional key technological advancements to further expand the ecosystem of interoperable, HDMI-enabled products.”

The Television Academy seeks to expand the horizons of television excellence.

HDMI Licensing is the agent appointed by HDMI Forum to license Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification and the agent appointed by the HDMI founders to license all earlier HDMI specifications. The HDMI Specification combines uncompressed high-definition video, multi-channel audio, and data in a single digital interface to provide crystal-clear digital quality over a single cable.  HDMI Licensing LLC provides marketing, promotional, licensing and administrative services, as well as education on the benefits of the HDMI Specification to adopters, retailers, and consumers.  The HDMI consortium was founded by Hitachi Maxell Ltd, Panasonic Corporation, Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV, Silicon Image Inc, Sony Corporation, Technicolor SA and Toshiba Corporation. HDMI Licensing LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Silicon Image Inc.
