Agru items shipped to South Africa

PE 100 black and PP grey pipes

Agru Kunststofftechnik, a global manufacturer of pipes, fittings, membranes and semi-finished products made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE), has been supplying its products to a project in South Africa over the past 12 years.

“In 2002 Sasol approached a company called Petzetakis Africa to supply HDPE pipes and fittings for the fire water mains,” an Agru spokesperson recalled. “It was decided that SDR11 pipe and moulded fittings would be used.”

Moulded fittings were specified for the job as no fabricated fittings were allowed to be used. The size range was 160-500 mm pipes and fittings. The project was to be an ongoing one for about 30 years. Sasol soon found out that 30 years was too long and stepped up the supply and installation to a period of 15 years, the spokesperson said.

“We specified Agru fittings which we have been supplying for the past 12 years without incident. The total value of fittings supplied for this contact is around R50,000,000 ($4,686,500). The project will continue for a few more years as we are only on Phase Three of five.

“The main lines were 500 mm SDR11 which have now been changed to 630 mm and all offtakes are now 500 mm SDR11. Fittings supplied in SDR11 were tees and bends of 90 degrees and 45 degrees and we are currently looking to supply stubs and reducing tees.”

All the requirements delivered to the project came from Agru’s industrial products portfolio. This product group offers industrial users a wide range of pipes for transporting aggressive media, but also fittings, valves and special components which are all essential in this field of application.

VERSATILE PRODUCTS

“We offer materials such as PE, PP, PVDF and ECTFE to handle a variety of operating conditions in industrial applications,” the spokesperson said.

Besides material diversity, the individual pipe components give users the ability to build pipelines across a wide range of dimensions and flow rates, thus making these products a perfect choice for plant construction. Particularly in conveying aggressive media, and also acids, the robust properties of plastic piping systems guarantee operating safety for many years.

The pipes, fittings, valves and special components for industrial applications are joined by means of proven welding methods such as butt, infrared, socket or E-socket welding. Accessories facilitate the installation, and welding machines round off Agru’s comprehensive range.

Benefits of materials such as PE and PP include high chemical resistance, the large temperature application range, and easy routing.

Applications range from cooling water pipes, pipelines in plant construction, process pressure lines for transporting aggressive media through to pipelines for transporting contaminated wastewater, exhaust gas and exhaust air lines, and piping systems in apparatus and tank construction.

Agru is represented in the Middle East region by BMC Gulf, which was established in 1998 to serve the local markets of the GCC region with specialised engineering services and turnkey solutions for industrial and private projects.
