Saudi Arabia's Amantit Group has said its Indian joint venture won a contract worth SR82.5 million ($22 million) to supply underground fuel storage tanks for India's Reliance Industries Limited.

The contract calls for the supply of 5,000 glass reinforced plastic (GRP) tanks. The Dammam-based firm said the tanks would be made in India by Amitech Pipes Systems India Limited, a 70:30 joint venture with the local Salgaocar Group.

Amiantit Pipes makes GRP pipes, tanks and fittings using a Flowtite machine licensed by the Saudi firm.

"This is the biggest ever order worldwide in the history of GRP storage tanks," said Amiantit managing director Fareed Al Khalawi. "We have won it because Amiantit has earned a global reputation for professionalism with all the capabilities, technical expertise and skills that are needed to undertake projects of this size and importance."

Amiantit's GRP underground and aboveground tanks have volume capacities up to 48,000 gallons and can store gasoline, aviation and jet fuel, diesel fuel, and potable or waste water.

The company says the tanks are resistant to corrosion and friendly to the environment because of their non-leakage properties. Set up 1968, Amiantit makes pipes, joints, fittings, tanks, rubber and insulation products and accessories. The company is listed on the Saudi stock exchange.
