Circal and Reduxa: setting new standards in recylced aluminium

New greener brands Circal and Reduxa set a new standard for low-carbon and recycled aluminum and make it easier for customers to promote more sustainable aluminum products.

CIRCAL AND REDUXA BRANDS

Hydro is now making it easier for its customers to promote aluminum products that are made from recycled post-consumer scrap or primary metal from hydro-powered smelters. The two new greener brands Circal and Reduxa are certified materials with details of CO2 footprint and fully traceability of the materials.

“We are working hard across our entire business to reduce our emissions and those of our customers. Through using renewable power and modern technology, Hydro can produce cleaner aluminum than ever before. We believe that as an industrial company we have the responsibility to help our customers on the path to a low-carbon future,” said Hydro’s president and CEO, Hilde Merete Aasheim.

Hydro Reduxa is a series of certified, low carbon aluminum with a maximum carbon footprint of 4.0 kg CO2 per kg aluminum. Hydro Circal is a range of prime quality aluminum made with a minimum of 75 per cent recycled, post-consumer scrap. The higher the recycled content of post-consumer scrap, the lower the carbon footprint.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

Customers in various industries, such as automotive and building and construction, increasingly have higher sustainability demands for their materials, triggered by regulations and rating programmes.

“We are starting to see a shift in mindset and the industry needs to support and follow – we need to create greener products, but we also need to push them and market them. This way we will also stimulate investments and new technologies that will change the way we produce and create products in the future, to be able to increase our portfolio of greener metal,” said Bjørn Kjetil Mauritzen, head of Hydro’s Climate Office.

The alloy Circal 75R was first launched in 2018, then under the product name Hydro 75R.  The first contracts have been signed by Hydro’s building systems brands Technal and Wicona, totaling hundreds of tonnes of aluminum. In Kuwait, Hydro delivers facades to a large government project, while medium-size projects have been signed in Germany, France, Sweden, the UK, the Netherlands, and Norway.

Hydro Circal is a range of products made with recycled post-consumer scrap. Through using recycled content, Hydro reduces energy use drastically while still being able to offer high quality products. The percentage of scrap will change depending on specifications from the client, but the company said it can always guarantee a CO2 footprint below 2.3 kg CO2 per 1 kg aluminum produced.

Hydro Reduxa is the company’s series of certified, low carbon aluminum. It’s made with renewable energy, which results in a maximum carbon footprint of 4.0 kg CO2 per kg aluminum – one-third of the global average. The result is among the world’s lowest carbon aluminum to date.
