Adhesive boost for packaging

Loctite Liofol offers high reliability and sustainability for food and non-food packaging and delivers good results for film and film structures

October 2015

Henkel has launched a new food-safe modular aliphatic adhesive system that offers optimal solutions for high performance retort processing and demanding flexible packaging applications.

The system comprises Loctite Liofol LA 2760/LA 5891-21 and Loctite Liofol LA 2760/LA 7371. With just one system for the inner and outer layer, Henkel´s LA 2760/LA 5891-21 grants direct FDA 177.1390 compliance while Loctite Liofol LA 2760/LA 7371 allows curing at room temperature.

Extended shelf-life is one of the dominating trends in the food industry of today. It offers more value and convenience for retail and consumers while generating sustainable benefits by reducing food loss.

Packaging is the centerpiece of extended shelf-life. It can be achieved by retort process which requires a certain product and temperature resistance of the food packaging material. When it comes to food, the packaging material not only has to withstand the requirements of demanding and high performance applications, it also has to fulfil rising requirements in safety and health.

“The new Loctite Liofol adhesive system offers just that adding sustainable benefits, reduced complexity and outstanding overall performance.” says Regina Müller, marketing manager at Henkel. “In combination with the hardener LA 5891-21, Loctite Liofol LA 2760 grants direct FDA 177.1390 compliance. If you focus on curing at room temperature the combination LA 2760 / LA 7371 is your perfect choice.”

Stefan Tomke, technical manager at Henkel, states: “The new modular aliphatic adhesive system is dedicated for high performance applications covering low migration and fast curing products. It offers high reliability and sustainability for food and non-food packaging and delivers best results for film/film structures including SiOx- or AlOx-coated barrier films and, film/foil structures.”

Loctite Liofol LA 2760/LA 5891-21 and LA 2760/LA 7371 are suitable for retort applications up to 60 minutes and a temperature up to 134 degrees Celsius. Unlike existing solutions in the market neither tin catalyst nor Bisphenol-A epoxy resins are used in the manufacture. Since the adhesives are based on aliphatic isocyanate starting materials they do not require testing for primary aromatic amines. With just one system for the inner and outer layer and with a high percentage of solid content of up to 40 per cent, both combinations reduce the consumption of ethyl acetate while granting best wetting properties and high filling good resistance.

In other Henkel news, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, as part of its innovation strategy, has signed a joint development agreement with US-based DropWise Technologies Corp.

DropWise, founded in 2014, is headquartered in Cambridge, MA. The start-up company has developed technology, intellectual property and lab-scale manufacturing know-how for a novel method of hydrophobic coating applications. The partnership will enable Henkel further expand its leading position in the global surface treatment business and drive growth with new applications. The global coatings market is rapidly changing with increasing demands for new technologies that offer additional functionalities and improved sustainability. Henkel Adhesive Technologies is aiming to drive the transition as first mover and to meet future customer requirements at an early stage. DropWise´s innovation will enable a durable polymer surface with unique properties that offer improved heat transfer.
