The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (Rina) announced the release of its two annual publications, Significant Ships and Significant Small Ships. Significant Ships features in its 11th issue 46 of the best commercial ship designs completed last year by shipyards worldwide.

The issue covers ships mostly over 100m in length and combines a comprehensive table of technical data together with a colour photograph and a full page of general arrangement plans in the format of previous editions.

Compiled by John Lingwood, in conjunction with the editorial staff of Rina's journal, The Naval Architect, Significant Ships of 2000 features newbuildings such as Blue Star 1 (Strintziz Lines ferry from Van der Giessen-de Noord), Millennium (gas turbo-electric cruise liner from Chantiers de l'Atlantique), Pole Star (navigation aids support vessel from Ferguson Shipbuilders Ltd, UK), Jin Hui (innovative 51,000dwt bulk carrier from Oshima Shipbuilding Co Ltd), Sea-Land New York (6252 TEU container liner from Hyundai), Sabina (9230dwt Damen combi-freighter from Damen Shipyards), Aurora (cruise ship for the British market from Meyer Werft), Vasco da Gama (33,000 cu m giant dredger from Thyssen Nordseewerke), Olympic Voyager (fast mono-hull cruise liner from Blohm & Voss) and Wolgastern (chemical tanker from Stockznia Gydnia), among others.

The 2000 version of Significant Small Ships follows the success of the 1998 and 1999 editions and the lead set by Significant Ships. The 2000 version is larger with more quality editorial pages and an entirely new format. The vessels are divided into categories such as fast ferries, tugs, fishing, offshore and patrol with each section introduced by a well-known expert in the field.

Significant Small Ships 2000 covers a wide variety of the most innovative, trend-setting and interesting commercial craft up to 100m in length delivered during the year by ship and boatyards worldwide. Each vessel presentation comprises a full page with colour photograph, a detailed technical description, the main particulars in tabular form and a list of major suppliers. The small ships featured include Speedy, a WaveMaster monohull fast ferry; the largest hovercraft patrol vessel every built by Griffon; Stirling Iona, Ferguson's latest AHTS; a batch of patrol boats from Image Marine, and Alert, Attentive and Aware, Crowley's latest escort tugs for Alaska;

Other ships making the edition include Ajax, built in Spain to a Canadian design for Norwegian duty; the latest auto express from Austal; Atlantic Challenge, a mid-water pelagic trawler built by AS Eidsvik Norway; Enselini and Palmiet, a South African tractor duo, and Jaya Commander, a Chinese-built OSV for a Singapore owner. Significant Small Ships 2000 provides a wealth of information in a readable format and features a total of 20 of the most innovative and important commercial designs completed worldwide that year.
